Dahurian Larch
Scientific name: Larix gmelinii
Description: Deciduous coniferous tree reaching 10-30 meters tall. Has needles that are light green and 2-3 centimeters long, which turns yellow-orange in autumn. Most common tree in the taiga forests of Eastern Siberia.
Interesting facts: Old cones commonly remain on the tree for many years, turning a greyish black color. Also the northernmost tree in the world.

Scientific name: Calypso bulbosa
Description: Typically 10 to 14 cm in height, and bright purple in color. Blooms usually happen in late March. Lifespan is no more than five years. Pollinated by Queen Bumblebees.
Interesting facts: Uses a technique called "pollination by deception". Extends yellow hairs in hopes of luring insects that expect nectar, but doesn't actually produce nectar.
Endangered?: Yes - despite having a wide range, the Calypso is extremely susceptible to disturbance. Classified as a threatened species.
